ノルウェーのデスメタルバンド Thou Shalt Suffer の『Into the Woods of Belial』をレビュー。1997年リリース。レビューするのはボーナストラックが2曲追加された2013年再発盤。

Emperor の前身バンド Thou Shalt Suffer の91年の音源を集めた初期音源集。収録曲の内訳は以下。

  • #8〜12：デモ『Rehearsal』
  • #13：リハーサル音源
  • #14：前身バンド Embryonic 時代のリハーサル音源

メンバーには Emperor の Ihsahn と Samoth の他 Ildjarn もいる。このバンドでやっているのはブラックメタルではなく、密閉度高めの音像の中を慌ただしい曲展開と不気味なキーボードで聴き手を翻弄する迷宮組曲デスメタル。

Morbid Angel を北欧型デスメタルでおどろおどろしく変容させたような音楽性。息苦しさを感じさせるドロドロした低い音空間は Incantation などに近い感触もある。Ihsahn は低く呻くデスボイスで歌っている。内容は個性的で決して悪くない。むしろ当時メンバーが16か17歳くらいだと考えるととんでもない才能だと改めて感心する。

全般的に篭った音質で特に後半のデモ音源は劣悪。迷宮サウンドと極悪音質音源が1時間あまり続く中々の責め苦。兇悪な音を鳴らしていた極初期の Emperor と同様に90年代半ば以降の Emperor ファンにはオススメできない代物。しかし本作はマニアにとっては理想的な回顧作品だろう。
